Beers at Home

When you just need something to wash the pie and chips down.



1. Badgers Hopping Hare - clear and light amber, good frothy head, strong citrus, gassy, flavour tails off quickly, very hoppy, a lovely summer beer.


2. Brains Spill the Beans - mmmmmm... Very tasty indeed, like a mocha with beer, smells chocolatey and a healthy coffee aroma, dark and very moreish.


3. Wood's Shropshire LAD - golden brown, quite clear, mildly sparkling, smooth, light bodied, frothy head, woody taste, chocolate hints, very pleasant.


4. Shepherd Neame Spitfire - fizzy and clear, chestnut brown, lovely head, light bodied, bitter edge, sharp, a fabulously arranged bottle of ale, Churchillian in nature.


5. Mordue Northumbrian Blonde - bubbly, bright and sweet, smooth and tasty, perfect for summer.


6. Why Not Brewery Norfolk Honey Ale - amber, mildly cloudy, syrupy, sweet, tickles the tonsils, quite fizzy, nice fuzzy head and a light refreshingness, nicely textured, why not? (These things happen)


7. Wells Sticky Toffee Pudding Ale - large head that grows after pouring, dark mahogany appearance, sparkling, sticky and sweet on top, rich and dark ale textures follow, very tasty.


8. Black Sheep The Fabled Riggwelter - strong frothy head, golden brown, light fizz, spicey front diving away quickly, softwood aftertaste.


9. Robinson's Old Tom - dark walnutty colour and frothy, nutty aroma, textured, smooth, warming, full blooded, it's like you can taste the barrel, smokey, full of character, raisins?


10. Hatherwood The Amber Adder - frothy head, delicious, clear, lightly fizzy, light red oaky colour, light sweetness in the aroma, gently hoppy, sits around on the tongue for some time, edging on bitter, quite lovely.


11. Guinness West Indies Porter - dark as the original, creamy frothy head, seems lighter than the original, spicey tones, tickles the back of the tongue, warms the throat, a tasty and moorish beer.


12. Weird Beard Brew Co. Single Hop Centennial Double IPA - cloudier than a murky overcast day in Wales, frothy, strong aroma, melon aroma, hops definitely at centre stage, tickle in the middle of the tongue, airy, a strong and very welcome beer.


13. Mad Hatter Brewing Company Tzatziki Sour - our first sour of the Odyssey, very pale, very cloudy, straw colour, very interesting smell of cucumber, hits the back of the tongue, very tasty.


14. Ringwood Brewery Forty Niner - ginger colour, no head, murky appearance, consistent light bubbled fizz, barley aroma, citrus notes, blood orange, rich and tasty, good body.


15. Siren Craft Brew I Love You Honey Bunny - rather lemon curd appearance, creamy yellow and opaque, lively head, tangy bitter aroma, quite scrungey, smooth, slight lingering bitterness, sweetness of honey, thickness from the oats and overall pleasant.


16. Holden's XB - dark nutty appearance, yeasty aroma, crisp, fizzy, hazelnut tints, very tasty and full of black country character.


17. Felinfoel Dragon's Heart - red brown appearance, barley aroma, textured, medium bodied, slips quickly off the tongue, cranberry bitterness, fizz all up front and dips quickly, tasty and smooth.


18. Siren Craft Brew Schwarzbier Cold Brew - cold, dark and frothy, pretty opaque, heavy overtones of coffee, lighter than expected, coffee flavour up front and ebbs away fairly quickly, roasted notes and very tasty.


19. Bunthaus Vanilla Killer - pale orange looking translucent beer with rising bubbliness, vanilla peachy aroma, like an ice cream sundae, a little prickle on the tongue, creamy and pleasant.

 

20. Braukunst BRLO Baltic Porter - darker than the London sewers, thin bodied, light fizz on the top, sweet black cherry flavour with overtones of liquor, a tasty and aromatic beer.


21. Harpers Brewing Co. Golden Crown - more golden than Michael Phelps neck, fizzy, clear, first class, bit of a zip, probably a bit too bitter for M, medium bodied, tropical and hoppy without being full  of flavour.


22. Harpers Brewing Co. Medusa Ruby Red Ale - dark with a red tint, laced with the blood of Medusa's victims, sweet aroma, blueberry, redcurrents, no fizz, thick like blood, occupies the tongue, latent bubbles, long-tailed, interesting, beguiling, rich.


23. Rothaus Tannenzäpfle - light coloured, light fizz at front, honey and sweet wine aroma, lightly textured, lovely, desserty, tickling the tongue, a top top beer.


24. Siris Microbrewery Voreia Stout - dark, very dark, woody aroma, hazelnut, bubbly sweetness at the front of the tongue, mahogany texture, deep and rich, bitter roasted coffee towards the rear of the tongue, very much worth it.


25. Dark Star American Pale Ale - cloudy like an overcast day, brownish, holds a good head, nutty on the nose, medium to fill bodied, nice texture, nutty flavours, little sizzle, nice to swallow.


26. Harpers Brewery Golden Ale - translucent, dark Amber, looks fairly fizzy, stale aroma, bittersweet initial taste, light bodied, pleasant but all too short lived like Owen Hargreaves footballing career. 


27. Titanic Brewery Plum Porter - frothy on top, fruity red aroma, off white head, very sweet, towards the light side, unusual, quite bitter but smooth, long aftertaste, deep prune taste, very nice. 


28. Ghost Dance Chinook Pale Ale - good solid Amber, quite clear, no real head, slight citrus, a reliable pale ale, quite bitter, tasty.


29. Reservoir Dogs Starvation Black IPA - black as the singularity, sweet initial taste, slight bitter background, roasted flavours coming in afterwards. 


30. Williams Bro's Brewery Studio 54 IPA - very Amber, slight head, rather bitter, like drinking fresh from the field, refreshing and tasty. 


31. Whiplash Rollover IPA - pale yellow, opaque and frothy on top, strong bitter aroma, fizzy to the tongue, lemon curd colour, not too heavy or strong, nicely textured. 


32. Anti-Establishment IPA - golden, light head, quite clear, steady, slightly strong, hoppy but not super bitter, quite crisp, a fairly pedestrian beer, nice but not as against the grain as one might have hoped for.


33. Williams Bro's Brew Co Brel Belgian IPA - more bubbles than a bubble bath, light hazelnut brown, no strong aroma, nut overtones, medium to full bodied mouthfeel, light cinnamon, two waves of flavour, very nice. 


34. West Berkshire Brewery Snake Oil Double IPA - fizzy, good head, crystal clear, hoppy as hell to the nose, so bitter that Jeremy Corbyn would tell it to pack it in, fruity, citrusy, crisp finish on the tip of the tongue. 

35. Wychwood Brewery Hobgoblin Gold - very amber, looks sparkling, frothy head, smooth, sessionable, not too fizzy, medium, mouth filling, very malty, a classic mild.

36. Siren Craft Brew Lumina - quite cloudy, rather yellow, mild froth, citrus and sweetness on the nose, tangerine/jaffa cake flavoured, light, sweet and tasty.
