Special Quiz Night One

18/01/18

Game on! 🎯

The Equitable, Woolwich.

A return to one of the favourite pubs of the Odyssey. Games and good beer are central to this pubs attraction, so a proper quiz night and a fine selection of ales to celebrate only seemed right.
The quiz consists of 4 parts of which the music round was always going to be the killer. And so it proved. Sadly with these things there's often a pooper. Two separate people felt the need to intrude on our quiz. Most unwelcome.

Beers:

Franciscan Well Brewery Friar Weisse - very frothy, cloudy, dark for a light beer, fizzy, slice of orange, served very cold, orange flavours coming right through, waves of sensation, quite rich.

Gipsy Hill Hepcat Session IPA - reasonably flat, quite cloudy, light amber, hoppy, tingly, very bitter going throughout, light to medium bodied, not in the top tier.

Sharps Wolf Rock Red IPA - dark, maroon red, clear, red fruits, sweet and pleasant, mealy, feels fresh and tasty.

Hop Stuff Four Hour Session IPA - clear, little fizz, amber, very bitter up front but empty bodied, flavour up front, wheaty.

Quiz performance:

26/60 points. Position 4/8. Decidedly mid-table.

Round Thirty Seven

18/01/18

155. The Earl Chatham, Thomas Street.

A nice looking pub, comfortable and warm. Pretty traditional. Pretty short on ales too.

Beers:

Fuller's London Pride - same old. Nice.

154. The Dial Arch, Beresford Street.

Quite a gem. Hidden away amongst the doldrums of Woolwich is a fairly swanky barn-like structure that houses beer. Good beer. Nice wide bar, great atmosphere. Clearly recognised as a good drinkery by the abundant custom. Wonderful leather grandfather chairs on the flagstone flooring give this place a great flavour.

Beers:

Beavertown Neck Oil Session IPA - light yellowy and pale, looks fizzy, very lemony aroma, meaty body, sits around on your tongue, fizz not distracting to the flavour, sweetness up front that departs to bitter, like a wine gum.

Brixton Brewery Reliance Pale Ale - light amber, orange tinted, no strong aroma, a lot of bitterness, probably had a tough upbringing, medium bodied, fizzy up front, orange zest up front, tasty.

153. The Bull, Vincent Road.

Not a great pub. Terrible colour scheme with plain feeling and hollow atmosphere. Glass was clearly unwashed. Poor choice of ales. Might be ok on a sports day.

Beer:

Sharp's Doom Bar - clear, walnut brown, inoffensive, light bodied, smooth, nutty sweetness, a pleaser.

Round Thirty Six

7/1/18

152. The Salt Quay, Rotherhithe Street.

Cracking large and spacious wooden Riverside pub with industrial flavour. Good ale choice, nice Riverside view, tidy, upper and lower bars and serves good food.

Beers:

Morland Old Mulled Hen - dark orangey look, spicey smell, cloudy like a winter's day, lingers, saucy, spiced at the start, strong cinnamon flavour throughout, thick and full.

Greene King Fireside Full Bodied ale - dark brown cloudy mahogany appearance, full bodied, smells sweet and warm, sticky toffee flavour comes through more subtly, tasty and aromatic.

151. The Blacksmiths Arms, Rotherhithe Street.

Lovely foliage decorated outside and sleek black painted wooden fronted pub on the river front makes for a lively welcoming pub. Nice leather seats and a seafaring heritage clear from within, notably with a painting of the famous HMS Victory on the wall. Sadly lacking in beer choice.

Beers:

Courage Light Ale - courageous and light, amber, very clear, inoffensive nasally, up front interest with a light fizz, gives way to a slightly watery taste to end.

Fuller's London Pride - brownish amber, clear, strong thick aroma, smooth, light bodied, lilts nicely at the end, tasty solid beer fit for any occasion.
