Round Twenty

14/11/16

80TH PUB SMOKEY SALOON CIGAR CELEBRATION!!!

83. The Prince Alfred, Porchester Gardens.

Bit more trendy this one which doesn't always go down well with us traditional gits. Not really our colours but they did come up with the all important beer so fairdos.

Beers:

Caledonian Brewing Co. 3 Hop Lager - empty bodied, bitter, fizziness doesn't come through, lager style, amber, strong thick head, not too exciting.

Caledonian Brewing Co. Flying Scotsman - dark amber, large head, clear, in a tankard, medium to heavy bodied, sweet and consistent throughout, tickle of fizz at the beginning, short middle but protected start and end, good beer.

82. The Redan, Westbourne Grove.

A satisfying alehouse who appreciate the virtues of solid oak and richness of leather. Nicely polished and presentable.

Beers:

Titanic Brewery Stout - darker than the nights sky, heady, stupendous, a perfect blend of chocolate and vanilla dancing in the stout, smooth, flavour comes afterwards and heightens to a luvverly aftertaste.

Brewdog Punk IPA - amber, light head, very bitter smell, citrusy, initial fizz, subtle flavour, gives way to a bitter taste, notes of grapefruit.

81. The Porchester, Porchester Road

The barman didn't even know what pork scratchings were. American. A very sad day for beerkind. Nonetheless a nice guy and a nice pub. Tidy, bright and beery.

Beers:

Greenwich Meantime Yakima Red - reddy brown, flat, woody cherry tasting, sweetness that dips away into a mild aftertaste, mild smokiness, quite empty bodied.

Southwark Brewing Co. Bermondsey Best - very slight fizz, amber to yellow, no head, no aroma, a firecracker!, The fizz hits you first then sweetness overtakes, complex and deceptive, tastes like a sugar shrimp.

80. The Bridge House, Delamere Terrace.

Situated next to a bridge. No really! Quite a nice fairly modern pub with a long bar. Red lanterns above the bar make you think it's warmer than it is.

Beers:

Moor Beer Company Claudia - exceptionally cloudy, light amber, frothy medium head, sweet smelling, very bubbly, sweetness gives way to bitterness, medium bodied and citrusy.

Redemption Trinity - clear and orange hue, no discernible aroma, light bodied, medium bitterness throughout, nice beer.

79. Warwick Castle, Warwick Place.

Excellent choice of boardgames, nice fireplace away from the main body of the pub. Really quite snug and pleasant.

Beers:

Truman's Swift - pale amber, flat as a pancake, bland and watery, slight bitter end, very disappointing.

Sharp's Original - dark browny red, no strong smell, medium bodied, like a breakfast bagel, nice but nothing to write home about.

78. Prince Alfred, Formosa Street.

Fantastic layout of mini rooms, fireplace and central bar with clock. Big windows, snob screens and intrigue. Very enjoyable.

Beers:

Young's London IPA - fizzy looking, minor fizz on the taste, dark amber, less head than bangkok chickboys 2 (presumably), bitter smell, strong bitter taste continuing throughout, full bodied, pleasant.

Young's Winter Warmer - dark maroon, reasonable head, a note of Christmas probably from a hint of cinnamon and dark fruits, sweetness at the end, empty bodied which is a shame but lifted by the woody fireplace aroma and taste.
